Two events into the championship, Victor Guerin’s history in Auto GP is a tale of unfulfilled potential. The Brazilian was always among the quicker drivers on track but for different reasons he still didn’t get the results he deserved.

In Monza it was down to an “aggressive” mood that ended in two crashes, while in Valencia it was an engine failure in Race 1 who robbed the young Brazilian of a possible podium finish. That engine blow also had a big impact on Race 2, as Guerin had to start from P16 on the grid, but Victor again proved his talent with a stunning drive that allowed him to recover up to P5. With such a pace, it will be worth to keep an eye on the 19 year-old from San Paolo in Marrakech, as he definitely wants to add a podium finish to his tally…

“Well I think that it’s time to get on that podium, I really want it and I feel I deserve it after the performances I’ve boasted in the first two events. It’s my first time on a street circuit but I’m confident: I worked hard at home and the lap I did on foot yesterday to check the track confirmed the impression I had from the Auto GP simulator. It’s a track where balls are needed, but that has never been a problem for me. I’ve already seen that the chicanes are pretty fast and I believe I can make a difference there, and I’m not scared by the walls. If I’ll need to race two inches from the edge, I will do it”.

You will have a special coach for this weekend, Gabriele Tarquini. Do you think that this is going to help you?
“I’m a very lucky guy because I have some very good coaches. Usually I’m followed by former F1 and WTCC racer Nicola Larini, and in my career I clinched a podium finish each time he was on track with me. It’s a pity that he couldn’t come to any of my Auto GP races so far, but in Marrakech I’m having a very good substitute in Tarquini: Nicola and Gabriele are good friends and so he was happy to help. He will be a valuable asset because he’s an amazing driver and he already raced here with WTCC in 2009 and 2010, so he will give me some useful tips on the track. Furthermore, even my engineer knows the track because he was here in 2010 too, so everything is in place for a good result!”.

How do you judge your Auto GP commitment so far?
“There have been some setbacks, especially in not managing to make the most of my potential, but the pace was always there and that means a lot, especially if you consider that a few weeks before the start of the championship my plan for 2012 seemed to consist of another year in the Italian F3. Then something changed: I’m a good friend of Kevin Ceccon, the 2011 Auto GP champion, and he kept telling me that in his opinion my driving style suited the car a lot.
I was already following the championship with interest and ultimately I asked my manager to arrange a test for me. At the same time, we were contacted by SuperNova who had an available seat for the official pre-season test and we decided to go for it".
"Monza isn’t the ideal track to try such a powerful car for the first time when you’re making the big jump from F3, but despite that I was immediately quick, P1 in the morning and P4 in the afternoon. After that, we quickly realized that Auto GP was the best option we had. I liked the car, the team was top-notch, and the budget was higher than F3 but still reasonable considering the performance of the car”.

How is your relationship with your team mate?
“Honestly, knowing that I was going to have a quick and experienced team-mate as Quaife-Hobbs was a factor in my choice to do Auto GP. We have a good cooperation, there’s a lot I can learn from him and our performances are always very close, we are pushing each other in a very positive way. But it’s not just Adrian, also the rest of the grid is really high-level, and having strong rivals definitely helps you in growing more quickly".

"I’m really happy of my choice, I think that this is the best way to prepare myself for GP2 at half the cost of other championships”.

Out Of Brazil – Auto GP: Guerin: "É hora de ir para o pódio"

Dois eventos no campeonato, e a história de Victor Guerin na Auto GP é um conto de potencial ainda não realizado. O brasileiro sempre esteve entre os pilotos mais rápidos em pista, mas, por diferentes razões, ele ainda não conseguiu os resultados que merecia.

Em Monza Guerin entrou na pista ligado no “modo agressivo”, o que fez sua participação terminar em dois acidentes, enquanto em Valência foi uma falha de motor na Corrida 1 que roubou do jovem brasileiro um provável lugar no pódio. Esse problema de motor também teve grande impacto na Corrida 2, com Guerin tendo que largar na P16 do grid. Mas Victor mostrou novamente seu deslumbrante talento de piloto, que lhe permitiu conquistar posições até completar a prova na P5. Dessa forma, valerá a pena manter em Marrakech um olho no piloto paulista de 19 anos, já que ele, definitivamente, quer somar um pódio em sua contabilidade...

"Bem, eu acho que já está na hora de subir naquele pódio. Eu realmente quero e sinto que mereço depois das performances que apresentei nas duas primeiras etapas do campeonato. Essa é a primeira vez que ando em um circuito de rua, mas estou confiante: Trabalhei duro em casa e ontem dei uma volta à pé para checar a pista, que confirmou a impressão que tive no simulador da Auto GP. Essa é uma pista onde é necessário ter bolas, mas isso nunca foi um problema para mim. Já vi que as chicanes são muito rápidas e acredito que eu possa fazer a diferença lá, pois não fico assustado com as paredes. Se vou ter de correr a dois centímetros da borda, eu o farei".

Você terá um coach especial para este fim de semana, Gabriele Tarquini. Você acha que isso vai ajudá-lo?
"Sou um cara de muita sorte, porque eu tenho alguns coachs muito bons. Normalmente sou acompanhado por um ex-piloto de F1 e da WTCC, o Nicola Larini, e na minha carreira eu fechei no pódio cada uma das vezes que ele estava na pista comigo. É uma pena que até agora ele não pode vir em nenhuma de minhas corridas da Auto GP, mas em Marrakech estou tendo em Tarquini um substituto muito bom: Nicola e Gabriele são bons amigos e por isso ele ficou feliz em me ajudar. E ele será muito valioso, porque ele é um piloto incrível e já correu aqui com WTCC em 2009 e 2010. Certamente ele vai me dar muitas dicas úteis sobre a pista. Além disso, meu engenheiro conhece bem essa pista, porque ele também esteve aqui em 2010, o que deixa as coisas em seus devidos lugares para conseguirmos um bom resultado!".

Como você avalia sua participação na Auto GP até agora?
"Houveram alguns contratempos, especialmente em não poder tirar o máximo do meu potencial, mas meu ritmo sempre rápido e isso já significa muito, especialmente se você considerar que até algumas semanas antes do início do campeonato o meu plano para 2012 consistia em fazer mais uma temporada na F3 italiana”.

“Então as coisas mudaram muito rapidamente: Eu sou muito amigo de Kevin Ceccon, campeão de 2011 da Auto GP, e ele ficava me dizendo que na sua opinião, o meu estilo de pilotagem se adaptava a esse tipo de carro. Eu já vinha acompanhando o campeonato com interesse e, finalmente, eu pedi ao meu manager para marcar um teste para mim. Ao mesmo tempo, fomos contatados pela SuperNova, que tinha um lugar disponível para o teste oficial de pré-temporada e, assim, decidimos ir participar dele. Monza não é a pista ideal para se experimentar pela primeira vez um carro tão potente, principalmente quando você está fazendo um salto tão grande, vindo da F3. Mas, apesar disso, eu conseguir se rápido imediatamente: P1 na parte da manhã e P4 no período da tarde. Depois disso, rapidamente percebemos que a Auto GP era a melhor opção que tínhamos. Eu gostei do carro, a equipe era de ponta, e o orçamento, embora fosse maior do que o da F3, ainda razoável, considerando a performance do carro”.

Como é seu relacionamento com seu companheiro de equipe?
“Honestamente, sabendo que eu ia ter um companheiro de equipe rápido e experiente como o Quaife-Hobbs, isso acabou sendo um fator decisivo em minha escolha de fazer a Auto GP. Temos uma boa cooperação, tenho aprendido muito com ele e nossas performances estão sempre muito próximas. Estamos empurrando um ao outro de uma forma muito positiva. Mas não é apenas Adrian, também o resto do grid é realmente de alto nível e competir com rivais fortes, definitivamente, te ajudam a crescer mais rapidamente”.

“Estou muito contente com minha escolha, acho que esta é a melhor maneira de me preparar para a GP2, com a metade do custo de outros campeonatos".
